Topics: Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable disease and death in the United States. Although significant public health progress has been made over the past half century in reducing cigarette smoking, several challenges remain. The tobacco product landscape has diversified to include emerging products such as electronic cigarettes, disparities in tobacco use continue to persist, and the tobacco industry continues to heavily promote its products to recruit and maintain consumers.

Dr. Brian King has worked for over a decade to provide sound scientific evidence to inform tobacco control policy and to effectively communicate this information to key stakeholders, including decision makers, the media, and the general public. In this grand rounds, he will provide an overview of the past, present, and future of tobacco control in the United States, including a discussion of the health and economic burden of tobacco use, evidence-based strategies to prevent and reduce tobacco use, emerging issues and ''hot topics'', and future directions in the field of tobacco control.
