Section 4, module 9 of CDC Training on Antibiotic Stewardship will focus on antibiotic stewardship in nursing homes. The module will cover antibiotics being frequently prescribed and inappropriately used in nursing homes and the potential adverse events and harm to nursing home residents. The implementation of actions to improve antibiotic use in a stepwise fashion and engaging leadership and identifying a local stewardship “champion” as essential aspects of effective antibiotic stewardship implementation will be discussed. Additionally, tracking and reporting antibiotic use and health outcomes to inform antibiotic stewardship action and education for antibiotic stewardship stakeholders as key for the success of antibiotic stewardship activities is addressed in this module.

Prerequisites

The audience will need to have background knowledge in microbiology, infectious disease, and primary care, as a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or clinical pharmacist would have.
