These Grand Rounds presentations are provided as a courtesy of CDC’s Preventive Medicine Residency and Fellowship (PMR/F) program with the goal of sharing concrete examples of applying systems-based approaches and leadership practices to population health interventions in a broad range of diseases and health conditions.

In this presentation, Dr. Harrell Chesson will provide a basic introduction to cost-effectiveness analyses of public health programs and interventions. The presentation will be geared especially to those with little or no formal experience with cost-effectiveness analysis, but who are interested in learning some of the key concepts and its application in public health.

Some of the common questions addressed will include: Why does CDC need economists? How is a cost-effectiveness ratio calculated? What is a quality-adjusted life year (QALY) and how is it measured? What is discounting? Would you rather live 30 more years with genital warts, or live 29 more years without genital warts?
