Taking an Exposure History (case study/monograph) is one in a series of self-instructional publications designed to increase primary care providers'' and other health professional''s knowledge of hazardous substances in the environment and to aid in the evaluation of potentially exposed patients. It provides the health care provider with the principles and processes of investigating the etiology of exposure possibilities when assessing and diagnosing patients and bridges the practice gaps that will allow physicians and other healthcare personnel to increase their knowledge/competency and make applicable practice changes to better prevent, diagnose, treat, counsel, and manage patients while taking an exposure history.

This is one in a series of courses intended to close the educational gap created by a paucity of formal training in environmental medicine for healthcare professional during undergraduate, graduate, and post graduate training and the Institute of Medicine (IOM) identified clinical competencies in environmental medicine recommended for the primary health care provider.

The monograph begins with a composite case study that describes a realistic encounter with a patient followed by an initial progress check and questions and answers. Tables and key points are presented.
